Trendy vs. Timeless

You may be tempted to incorporate all of this years “it” trends in your kitchen but you might want to think twice before pulling the trigger. Your kitchen is one of the biggest selling features in your home, so you’ll want to make sure to come up with a design that will pass the test of time. This doesn’t mean you can’t play with ANY trends but it’s something you definitely want to keep in mind. A good rule of thumb is to make sure the base of your kitchen (cabinets, counters, backsplash) is timeless, and then incorporate trends into easy, interchangeable items like rugs, chairs and accessories.

Lighting is something that can have a huge impact in a room but may easily be overlooked during the design process. You don’t have to stick with your builder grade fixture. Find a light that is unique and speaks for itself. The right light fixture can take a room from basic to wow!

Hardware may be small but has the power to significantly change the look of your kitchen. The shape of your hardware can set the tone for the entire space. Figure out what vibe you are trying to accomplish. Are you wanting a modern feel? Look for hardware with straight lines and edges.  What about a French/Country feel? Look for hardware with curves and more intricate detail. Don’t be afraid to mix and match sizes. Using a combination of bin pulls and knobs will help break up the cabinetry and is also very pleasing to the eye.

Wait! Stop! Don’t rip out those ugly brown cabinets just yet. If your cabinets have a good layout and function properly, you might want to think twice before swinging that hammer. Cabinetry can be very expensive and if they are in good condition you may be able to paint them instead of replace them. Refinishing cabinets is a huge task so I suggest hiring someone to do the sanding and painting for you. It will still be significantly cheaper than having them replaced and will remove a lot of the stress during the remodeling process.

Backsplash is not easily removed, so when choosing, choose wisely. This might not be the best place to be daring. Select a tile that you feel you will still love 5 years down the road. Don’t limit yourself to thinking the backsplash can only go underneath the cupboard space. Taking your tile all the way up a wall, above a window or above your cabinets can provide more interest and give your space a high-end feel.

Here’s the fun part, adding more character into your kitchen! Now don’t get crazy here, you don’t want your kitchen looking like it threw up a cluttered mess. Instead of overloading your counters with unnecessary items, display accessories with intention, that are both pretty and functional. For example: Find a unique “catch all” bowl that can be used to hold everyday things like mail or keys. Invest in a beautiful cutting board that you can both display and use. Take time to find a pretty utensil holder that adds personality and function.

All in all, remember to have fun with your kitchen remodel. Let your personality shine though. You can still be bold while also keeping it timeless.
